I'm preparing for my first foray into wireless networking yeah, I know, about time I got into the 21st century , and after online researching, was totally confused about where to start. I didn't even know enough to know what questions to ask. This handy little book went a long way toward helping me figure it all out.
It assumes a basic knowledge of computers in general, but goes on to explain in plain English what wireless networking is, what it can do, and how you can do it. There are also little sidebars of more technical background information if you're so inclined, but you can ignore these and still get what you need to know from the main body of information.
You will get good information on what equipment to buy and not buy , how to set it up, pitfalls you may encounter, and much is written about the all-important wireless security measures you must take.
Whether you simply want to network one desktop and one laptop, or go all out and turn your home into the Starship Enterprise, this book will help you.
It does tend to get a little redundant in some areas, and of course there are the obligatory shameless plugs for other "dummies" books, but imo, these are not worth knocking a star off.
And the authors readily admit that they are writing in generalities, as all homes and all systems are different, and have different requirements. So after reading this book, you will still need to do some further research to find specifically what works for you. But bottom line, I would highly recommend this book, whether you are a newbie to wireless, or just want to update yourself on the newest trends and technology. To me, it was well worth the price paid.
As in the headline, it is information, and doesn't even mention long range wifi wireless systems. Gets Two Stars for perhaps Maybe being timely when published, but still ignoring wifi needs outside the house.
First class book, but it could use some updating. Some obsolete technologies are discussed that could confuse some readers. Hubs and dial-up not DSL modems, for example, have not been on the market for many years.
Similarly it has been a long time since since any laptops come without Wi-Fi already built in. I almost did not buy this excellent book because it has not been updated since Fortunately, however, wireless standards have not changed since , so the book is still very useful. I thought this would be a more recent treatise on wireless networks, but this, unfortunately, was last updated in , so it's missing a lot of current information.
It's helpful with some terminology but really doesn't cover more recent developments. It would probably be best to read the first chapters of the book before going out and purchasing any networking gear. Inkjets have been known to dry out and clog if they sit idle for too long between uses, and to get them going again you need to run cleaning cycles that waste ink and drive up your operating costs.
Laser printers can sit unused for weeks or even months on end with no downside. We have recommendations for photo printers and document scanners if you need better performance for those specific tasks.
A few years ago, we declared that all printers suck. But with a few advances, printer makers have inspired some guarded hope for the future. Since setup is often the most frustrating part of printer ownership, we were especially critical of installer packages, print-and-scan software, connectivity issues, and the mobile app quality.
